The Merrion Hotel
★★★★★Four Georgian Townhouses, Restored Into Dublin's Grandest Address
The Merrion occupies four adjoining Georgian townhouses on Merrion Square, restored into a single hotel of 142 rooms and suites without erasing the proportions of the houses underneath. The restoration kept the Georgian scale that gives the public rooms their height and light, and filled them, deliberately, with an art collection rather than hotel-standard prints: murals by Martin Mooney in the Front Hall stairwell, and major Irish twentieth-century paintings throughout the ground floor. Opposite Government Buildings and a short walk from Grafton Street, the galleries, and the Dublin Convention Centre, the address puts the hotel at the centre of a city most of its guests have come to see on foot.
Why It Works
We chose The Merrion for the art collection as much as the address: works by Jack B. Yeats, Louis le Brocquy, Mary Swanzy, Paul Henry and Roderic O'Connor hang through the Front Hall and the restaurant rather than in a locked gallery, and the hotel's Art Tea turns the collection into miniature cakes served in the Drawing Rooms each afternoon. Patrick Guilbaud's two Michelin stars give the hotel a dining room that would anchor a stay on its own, and membership of The Leading Hotels of the World backs up the atmosphere with an independent standard.
Why This Location
Merrion Square sits in the heart of Georgian Dublin, directly opposite Government Buildings and within walking distance of the National Gallery, Grafton Street's shops, and the IFSC across the river. Guests can reach most of central Dublin's sights on foot from the door, which matters in a city where traffic rather than distance slows a taxi down. The National Gallery of Ireland and the Natural History Museum sit within a five-minute walk, and Trinity College's campus is close enough to reach before the shops on Grafton Street open. The square itself, with its railings and gardens, gives the hotel a quieter immediate outlook than a city-centre address usually allows.

Patrick Guilbaud and the Art Tea
Dinner at Patrick Guilbaud has carried two Michelin stars for years, in a dining room hung with Paul Henry and Roderic O'Connor paintings rather than standard hotel art. For a lighter version of the same idea, the Art Tea in the Drawing Rooms serves afternoon tea built around miniatures of the hotel's own collection, including a version of Louis le Brocquy's tapestry work, alongside the usual sandwiches and scones. The Cellar Bar and No. 23 Cocktail Bar cover the rest of the day without needing to leave the building.
Before You Book
The spa, eighteen-metre pool and gym matter more here than at a typical city-centre hotel, since a stay built around Patrick Guilbaud's tasting menu benefits from somewhere to swim it off the next morning. The hotel sits opposite Government Buildings, which means a quiet square by evening but occasional security presence and road closures during state events, worth checking before booking around a specific date. Rooms facing the square tend to be requested first for the view over the gardens, so guests with a preference are better naming it at booking rather than on arrival. Walking is the practical way to reach most of central Dublin from here; a car adds little beyond the airport transfer.
